The ferry between Banjul and Bara It works, but can be overloaded and safety standards are not up to European standards. An alternative option is the Senegambia Bridge.
When traveling by local boats or pirogues, check for life jackets. It is not advisable to use overloaded boats for long journeys.
Medical options in Gambia are limited, especially outside the capital and tourist areas. Private clinics often operate on a fee-for-service basis, and medical evacuation can be very expensive.
Malaria poses a high risk in Gambia, including due to Plasmodium falciparum. There is also a risk of dengue, yellow fever, Zika, schistosomiasis and other diseases.
Before traveling, discuss the necessary vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis with a doctor or travel medicine office.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months and up, when arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever or have transited for more than 12 hours through an airport in such a country.
